CALCAS consists of 8 Workpackages. In addition to the overall project co-ordination line (WP1) and the dissemination line (WP8), there are three main activity lines (WP2-7);
- Sustainability science supply: specification of available knowledge, gaps therein and strategies for filling these gaps (WP 3, 4, 5)
- Sustainability science demand: the specification of aligned knowledge requirements for public organizations; industry and industrial organizations; consumers, citizens and NGOs; R&D sector, reckoning with several levels of decision making, from decisions on purchasing and installation maintenance to policy strategies and R&D strategies in firms, systematically placed in the new governance perspective (WP6)
- Linking supply and demand: strategy and programme specification for focused scientific development for sustainability oriented decision making (WP7)
The objectives of each WP are listed in the following:
WP1: Project Management (ENEA)
To organise the project as a whole, initiate its different phases, accomplish all necessary administrative tasks, report to the Contractor, by coordinating all the workpackages through the WP-leaders.
WP2: Scientific Framework (CML)
To draft an analytic framework for specifying available LCA and LCA related knowledge, its scientific foundations, relation to questions and decision situations, relations to other non-life cycle based models and tools for sustainability analysis, and gaps therein.
WP3: Options for broadening LCA Methodology (WI)
Analysis of overlapping, integrations, synergies with related methodologies and application frameworks:
a)physical tools- PIOT, EEIOA, GLUA, SFA, MFA
b)monetary tools – CBA, Green accounting and contingency valuation
c)application frameworks – Hybrid LCA, IA, EAI, SEA
WP4: Governance and LCA (FFU + IOEW)
Analysis of actual and potential relationships of life cycle tools in;
a)Role of governments, and national and international sustainability strategies (UN, OECD and EU)
b)New forms of handling science; LCA development as a result of the sustainability context in a global and regional context
WP5: Evolution of the standardised LCA (ENEA)
The principles and guidelines for standardisation of LCA will be developed, as input to a revised version of the ISO14040 Series, covering both the domain of ISO-LCA as has developed in the last years and the deepened and broadened as developed in this project.
Identification of presently partially met needs and of future needs by:
2)Business (industry, retailers)
3)NGOs, consumer associations, citizens
4)R&D programmers (European Technology Platforms, National funding organizations)
WP7: New LCA Strategies and research (CML)
Specification of new LCA strategies and overall research lines and a roadmap for their further development.
WP8: Dissemination (UNEP)
•Dissemination of the project results internally among the project partners and externally to a broad audience.
•Development of networks, “cross” among scientists and “vertical” between them and the users (public authorities, industries, NGOs and researchers)
•Implementation of LCA in academic curricula
